MAKING HISTORY...was Arcanum's Jared Beatty (above) and John Sullenbarger, who became the first state qualifiers in school history.

Five wrestlers from the Cross County Conference qualified for the 2010 state wrestling tournament with top-four finishes at the district meet at Kettering Fairmont over the weekend.

Covington's Andrew DeHart and Miami East's Zane Golberg both took home district championships in their respective weight classes, while Arcanum's Jared Beatty took runner-up honors - losing to Goldberg in the finals at 125 pounds.

John Sullenbarger of Arcanum took third at 189 pounds and freshman sensation Allen Seagraves of Miami East took fourth at 103 pounds to qualify for state.

DeHart, who placed 6th at state as freshman and 4th at state as a sophomore, knocked off Troy Christian's Kyle Burns 5-0 in the finals of the 145 pound weight class. The victory was a sweet one for DeHart as Burns won a 2-1 decision in the sectional final and came into the tournament a favorite to win the 145 pound state title after placing 2nd at 152 pounds a year ago. DeHart used a two-point reversal and a three-point near fall in the second period to record the win.

The Covington junior reached the finals with three straight pins. He opened the tournament with a pin in 3:45 of Anthony Patterson of Lima Central Catholic and then disposed of Wyatt Running of Clinton-Massie in 3:55. The third pin came in the semifinals as he took just 2:28 to defeat Mitch Bloom of Mohawk.

Golberg is no stranger to the state meet either as he qualified a year ago. Unfortunately illness became his downfall, making Golberg hungry this year for a spot on the podium.

That hunger was on display this weekend as he rolled through the competition in his first three matches and then earned a hard-fought victory over fellow CCC wrestler Jared Beatty of Arcanum in the finals by the score of 8-4.

Golberg opened the tournament with a 16-1 technical fall over Austin Teeters of Jefferson and then recorded a 14-3 major decision over Josh Cioca of Blanchester. He locked up his spot in the district final and the state tournament with a 6-0 victory over Mohawk's Kyle Parker in the semifinal.

Jared Beatty (125 lbs.) and John Sullenbarger (198 lbs.) became Arcanum's first ever state qualifiers with their efforts. Beatty rolled into the finals against Golberg with three straight wins, while Sullenbarger won his first two matches before falling into the consolation round with a narrow 5-4 defeat in the semifinal. The Trojan senior rebounded with two more big wins to take third.

Allen Seagraves took a similar path to the state meet as he won his first two matches in impressive fashion before dropping his semifinal bout. The Viking freshman regrouped and qualified for the state tournament with a victory in the consolation semifinal before falling in the consolation final for fourth place at 103 pounds.

The five wrestlers will represent their schools and the Cross County Conference this coming weekend in Columbus. Wrestling is slated to begin on Thursday and will run through the finals on Saturday.
