A PINNING MACHINE...was Arcanum's John Sullenberger, who pinned every opponent in the setional tournament.
Fifteen Cross County Conference wrestlers qualified for the district meet with top four finishes at the sectional tournament this past weekend at Lehman High School.
Six wrestlers in the conference reached the championship match with two coming home with sectional titles.
Miami East's Zane Goldberg, a returning state qualifier from a year ago, wasted little time disposing of Austin Black of Mechanicsburg in the finals with a pin in 47 seconds. Goldberg advanced through the 125 pound bracket with a 19-4 tech. fall over Justin Parcells of Northwestern and a pin over Randy Jennings of Thurgood Marshall in 4:55.
Arcanum's John Sullenberger was impressive over the weekend as well, capturing the championship at 189 pounds. Sullenberger pinned Ty Wesserman of Mechanicsburg in 1:33 of his finals match. The Trojan senior breezed through his weight class with a 28 second pin over Will McFadden of Springfield Catholic Central, a 1:04 pin over Brandon Setty of Northeastern and a 29 second pin of Ryan Jacob of Lehman Catholic.
Dropping their championship bouts for second place were Covington's Kyler Deeter and Andrew DeHart; and Tri-County North's Jacob Huffman and Todd Delong.
Deeter advanced to the finals with wins over Nick Wirrig of Tri-County North, Brandon Apol of Dayton Christian and Alex Vencill of Northridge. He lost a 6-1 decision in the finals to long-time friend and former teammate from his youth wrestling days, Jordan Marshall of Troy Christian.
Two-time state placer Andrew DeHart battled last years state runner-up at 152 pounds in the finals, Troy Christian's Kyle Burns. The top two seeds at 145 pounds put on a clinic on wrestling technique, but DeHart fell by the slimmest of margins, 2-1. The two could very well see each other two more times throughout the state tournament.
DeHart rolled into the finals with a 47 second pin over Nick Francis of Versailles and a 13-0 major decision over returning state placer Dustin Chatterton of Dixie.
Tri-County North's Jacob Huffman was impressive at 119 pounds as he advanced to the finals with a 15-0 tech. fall over Sam Miller of Brookville, a 16-0 tech fall over Cameron Pierce of Northeastern and a 14-3 major decision of Aaron Wilbanks of Brookville. Huffman dropped his championship bout to Britt Wooten of West Liberty-Salem, 10-3.
Huffman's teammate, Todd Delong, also rolled into the finals at 285 pounds with victories over Devonte Bryant of Thurhood Marshall (pin in 1:41) and Ty Newton of National Trail (5-2 decision). DeLong dropped his finals match to Aaron Howard of Northeastern.
Six wrestlers took third in their respective weight classes with victories on the consolation finals. They were Alan Seagraves and A.J. Ganger of Miami East, Matt Breisch of Covington, Jared Beatty and Sam Pankratz of Arcanum, and Ty Newton of National Trail.
Qualifying for districts with a fourth place finish were Sam Angle and Josh McMillion of Covington, along with Tyler Loxley and Josh Liles of Arcanum.
The fifteen CCC wrestlers will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at Kettering Fairmont High School in the district tournament.
