MIAMI EAST BEATS SOUTH

STILL WALKIN' TALL...is Scott Wimmer and the Miami Vikings with yet another big victory.

By Dwaine Maxson
Miami East won its homecoming by beating Twin Valley South 45-14 Friday night. The Viking offense pounded the Panthers with 449 yards rushing. On the other side the Miami East defense forced four South turnovers.

Brock Smith got the Vikings on the scoreboard first on a 14 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Later in the first Josh Snyder kicked a 34 yard field goal to put East up 10-0. In the second quarter Tyler Dunivan scored on the first play of the drive on a 79 yard touchdown run. Later in the second the Panthers scored their first on a Skylar Reckers 33 yard run to make it 17-7 and that was the score at halftime.

The only score in the third was by Viking Brock Smith when he on a 76 yard touchdown run. But the Panthers did not give up. Early in the fourth quarter Miles McCollum threw a 61 yard touchdown pass to Stephen Balthis to make it a 24-14 game. However that was as close as South would get. Right after an unsuccessful onside kick by the Panthers the Vikings took over on the 50 yard line. Then on the first play Kyle Noe scored on a 50 yard touchdown run. Later Brady McMaken scored on a 30 yard run and Kevin McMaken scored the final touchdown of the night on a 7 yard run.

“We played hard and hit hard tonight. South did not give up and a couple of times tonight came back to make it a 10 point game, so give them credit. We just kept playing hard and pulled away in the fourth quarter. This week we need to be focused on National Trail and keep working hard at practice,” Viking head coach Max Current commented after the game.

Tyler Dunivan lead Miami East with 151 yards rushing on 17 carries and a touchdown. Dunivan also passed the 1,000 yard mark for the second straight season and now has 1,005 yards on the season. Brock Smith had 94 yards on just 8 carries and 2 rushing touchdowns along with one catch for 22 yards. The Panthers top player on offense was Mile McCollum who was 7 of 15 for 147 yards passing.

Next week Miami East (7-1, 7-0) travels to National Trail while Twin Valley South (2-6, 2-5) travels to Bradford.
